Sorry for being a slacker

Sorry for being so remiss in posting this week. Mostly to Dad as he reads this blog too.
There has been so much to do and figure out since we got the news we are moving to Alaska.
I am beyond excited to go. It is a new grand adventure for Shawn and I. Empty Nesters and moving 2500 miles from anyone we know.

I am so looking forward to exploring the historic towns and early settlements. Watching wildlife like my own personal Zoo and discovering a life without kids in it. It's going to be a whirlwind of emotions that I am clearly not prepared for. Hopefully I'll make new friends with a cute baby or toddler I can babysit every once in awhile.
This is how we will be traveling from Bellingham, WA to Juneau, then from there to near Anchorage.
The Alaska Marine Highway System. It's actually pretty cool and I plan on taking many trips on the ferry. It's like Tri-Met for the Ocean. They even have Stay Cabins for those who don't like to rough it. That would be me. I can use a public shower, but I need a place to lie down. We will be on the ferry for almost 4 whole days.

So not only do I have to pack up my house, sell it, deal with my pets, and Star. I have to make travel plans for our 4 day Ferry trip.
We have to bring our own food, bedding and the animals have to stay in carriers in the cargo bay while we are underway.
It's going to be a grand adventure that I absolutely can't wait for!

Is Star traveling on the boat too? That will be a big adventure.

We came up on the Malaspina in 1975. They had a dining facility but I was going to suggest you pack your own food because it was super expensive and really wasn't all that great. Of course, things have probably changed in 35 years. We docked in Juneau at about 2:00 a.m. and my husband had to get up to walk the dog. I stayed in bed.
I'm sure you'll find people more than happy to let you watch their kids. I watch my friend's grandchildren now and then to get my baby fix. I'm curious also how you're going to get Star up here.

Star is going to be coming via Airplane, or net Spring we will drive her up. Nothing is solid yet.

Sounds like quite the adventure you'll be having! The ferry sounds neat. I loved Bellingham when I drove through several years ago- so much that I wanted to move there. I've never been to Alaska but I've always wanted to.

And I hope you document it all via photos and your updates, for us.
I envy you, and am so thrilled for you at the same time.

I've always wanted to visit Alaska. I hope I get invited to visit you when you get settled in (wink-wink)

Wow! How amazing is this going to be? Alaska looks GORGEOUS, and I can't wait to see the pictures of your journey. By the way, you are one YOUNG empty nester!! :)

Another possibility occurred to me regarding transporting Star. I don't know if you would want to entrust her to strangers but there often are ads on Craigslist for people transporting horses to/from Alaska that have openings for additional animals. There are probably similar resources in horse communities that I'm unaware of.

It is a very big deal, moving to Alaska. I wonder what you will find the people to be like there. Sometimes I think Alaska is full of people who must love nature and animals, and other times I hear Alaskans on the radio or the news and they seem like they just want to kill all the animals and drill for oil! I'm sure it is not so black and white but I am very interested to hear what it really is like there. I am also very interested to hear how it is moving your horse too! That sounds like it will make a series of excellent blog entries!!
